Nuwara Eliya

Over View

Situated in the central province of Sri Lanka, Nuwara Eliya is considered to be the most important location for tea production in Sri Lanka with a picturesque landscape and temperate climate. It is at an altitude of 1,868 m (6,128 ft) and is overlooked by Pidurutalagala, the tallest mountain in Sri Lanka. This beautiful location is also called “Little England”, because of its cool climate. Many of the buildings retain features from the colonial period such as the Queen's Cottage, General's House, Grand Hotel, Hill Club, St Andrew's Hotel and Town Post Office. New hotels are often built and furnished in the colonial style. Many private homes maintain their old English-style lawns and gardens. The town really comes alive in April for the Sinhalese and Tamil New Year. It is difficult to find accommodation as Sri Lankans holiday in the region during this period. The town's attractions include the golf course, trout streams, Victoria Park, and boating or fishing on Lake Gregory. Victoria Park is an attractive and well-used oasis. It is popular with birdwatchers at quieter times because of the good opportunities for seeing a variety of species.

Thigs to do in Nuwara Eliya

The Lake was created by “Governor William Gregory”, between 1872 and 1877. It was used for water sports during the British colonial Period. The Lake is situated in the middle of Nuwara Eliya, and if you are looking to relax and enjoy the view the park is right next to the Lake with walkways and benches to rest on. There is horseback riding on the premises and for just a few rupees you can take a 20 minutes speedboat ride on the lake.

The main park in Nuwara Eliya is called Victoria Park, in honor of Queen Victoria’s 60th Jubilee coronation in 1897. The park spreads out on 27 acres of land and is the perfect place for a stroll with family and friends. There is enjoyment for the kids too

The Nuwara Eliya Post Office is housed in an antique Tudor Manor built-in 1894. It’s one of the oldest post offices in the country and was featured on a stamp in 1990. Definitely worth a visit.

This is the largest dairy farm that is located in Nuwara Eliya, however just a little bit out of town though. Visitors can see the milking stations of the dairy cows and see the calves in the nursery. The cows are well taken care of and the visit is quite pleasant. The farm is pretty big so there is a lot of walking. You can treat yourself to a fresh glass of milk at the café station and buy fresh cheese as well

Nuwara Eliya is a hill country, meaning that it’s also a tea country. There are hundreds of acres of tea plantations in Nuwara Eliya and plenty of tea factories to visit in the area. A little further away from the town is St. Clair’s fall, one of the widest falls in the country and definitely worth a visit.

The Moon Plains is rather a new place in Nuwara Eliya to visit. Moon Plains is an open area full of fields, forests, walking paths and much more, this location would be ideal for nature lovers.

The Hakgala Botanical Gardens is believed to be situated at the highest altitude than most botanical gardens in the world. On the road to Badulla, you make a stop at the green gate and visit the beautifully manicured gardens full of roses and orchids and other plant species.

Further down south passing Ambewela located high up into the mountains is the national park, ‘Horton Plains’, that would give a breathtaking view from one of its major attractions, ‘worlds end’.  The hike to worlds ends in Horton Plains national park is quite a thrill and adventurous. World’s End is a drop-off at the edge of a huge cliff at the end of the Horton Plains plateau
