The town itself is small, has excellent shopping, guesthouses, trendy restaurants, and quite a lot of activities and sightseeing nearby. Unawatuna is a coastal town in Galle and is a major tourist attraction in Sri Lanka that is known for its beaches and corals. The seashore is dotted with thousands of trees, coconuts, and palms dominating, strings of houses, restaurants, and hermitages along the coastline. Unawatuna is rich in its biodiversity and an attraction for eco-tourism due to the marshland and mangrove. There are over sixty species of endemic birds sighted by the ornithologists. The birds are mostly sighted in the remaining marshy area and Rumassala Hillock. Unawatuna is also the home to the endangered “purple-faced langur'', a shy monkey species that can only be found in Sri Lanka’s forest. On the coast of Unawatuna lies a number of coral reefs, shipwrecks, and a great variety of fish and turtles. The best time to visit is between February and April when low rainfall and calmer seas provide the perfect weather to explore the area. Unawatuna is considered one of the 100 best beaches in the world!
